Limburg United is a professional basketball team from Hasselt in the Belgian province of Limburg . It was founded in 2014 with the aim of participating in the closed professional league Basketball League Belgium , from which it was subsequently also licensed. As a result of a sponsorship deal , the team's full name is currently Hubo Limburg United .
history
The last most successful basketball team in the province of Limburg was the Bree BBC , which had become Belgian champions in 2005 but had to withdraw its professional team from the closed Basketball League Belgium (SU) in 2008 . Subsequently, no club from the province was represented in the top Belgian league. In 2014, a new club was founded in the provincial capital Hasselt with the aim of participating in the BLB professional league. Part of the concept was the founding of the Lotto Academy to promote young players in the province. The team was then licensed by SU and participated in SU games at the beginning of the 2014/15 season. First head coach was Brian Lynch , husband of Kim Clijsters and in 2005 as a player champion with the Bree BBC. After the fourth main round place in the first season they lost in the first play-off round against the former series champion Spirou BC Charleroi . A year later, after the same main round placement, they reached the semi-finals, in which defending champion Telenet Oostende was lost just after five games . With the start of the 2016/17 season, Hubo Limburg United will take part in an international club competition for the first time and will start in the FIBA Europe Cup 2016/17 .
