The season 2016/17 was the second season of the FIBA Europe discharged FIBA Europe Cup , the successor of the Euro Challenge . After the introduction of the Basketball Champions League , the competition saw significant changes.
The title was won by Nanterre 92 from France .
mode
According to the original plans, 48 teams were initially planned for the first group phase of the competition instead of 56 teams as in the previous year, with 24 participants being included and 24 losing qualifications for the 2016/17 Basketball Champions League and another eight teams from the Champions League for the knockout phase should join the participants of the Europe Cup. After the participants of the Champions League were subject to some fluctuations in the conflict with the EuroCup 2016/17 , 26 teams were finally seeded for the first group stage of the Europe Cup, with twelve losers from the Champions League qualifying the field of 38 teams at the beginning of the Europe Cup added.
These 38 teams in the first group stage came into a western and eastern "Conference" in ten groups (A-J), of which eight groups of four teams and two groups with just three teams in a round robin tournament ( English Round Robin ) with round and return match against each other. In Central Europe, the conferences were practically divided along the former " iron curtain ", with Estonian and Hungarian teams belonging to the western and teams from Kosovo , Turkey and Israel to the eastern conference. Only two teams from Kosovo, which is controversial under international law , took part from the former Yugoslav territory . After Serbian clubs had not registered for the competition, as in the previous year , the Bosnian club and qualification loser KK Igokea Aleksandrovac from the Republika Srpska decided not to participate in this competition. The two best teams in each group and the four best thirds from all groups qualified for the second group stage.
In the second group phase, another round-robin tournament with a return leg was played in six groups with four teams each. Of these 24 participants, the six group winners of the second group phase, the two best runners-up and eight “relegated” from the group phase of the Basketball Champions League 2016/17 qualified for the round of 16, from which the knockout system continued. Instead of using the " Best of Three " mode as in the previous year, the addition of the results from the first and second leg is decisive in the knockout system. Consequently, a tie result in the first leg, which only serves as an interim result, was possible and only a tie result after adding both game results made an extra time necessary in the second leg to determine a winner. This mode was maintained until the finals to determine the title winner.
Last year's title winner Fraport Skyliners , who qualified directly for the first group phase of the Champions League, won his title at a Final Four weekend.
First group stage
The first group stage matches took place between October 18 and November 23, 2016. For teams with the same number of wins, it was not the total point ratio that was decisive for the group placements, but only the added result in a direct comparison of the teams with one another.
