Hugo Frederik Nierstrasz (born June 30, 1872 in Rotterdam , † September 6, 1937 in Walenstadt ) was a Dutch zoologist.

Life

Hugo Frederik was born as the son of the notary Richard Hendrik Nierstrasz (* February 7, 1868 in Rotterdam; † June 9, 1939 ibid) and his second wife Johanna Sophia Petronella Beijerman (born February 2, 1841 in Rotterdam; † February 14, 1875 ibid) born. After attending the Erasmusgymnasium in Rotterdam, he studied medicine at the University of Utrecht . Under the influence of Ambrosius Hubrecht , he turned to the study of biology. From 1899 to 1900 he took part in the Siboga expedition to the Dutch East Indies and received his doctorate cum laude on June 30, 1902 in Utrecht with the subject The solenogastres of the Sibogra expedition (German: Die Furchenfüßer der Sibogra-Expedition ) . From 1900 to 1906 he was a teacher of biology at the grammar school in Amersfoort , became a lecturer at the University of Utrecht in 1904 and at the Reich Veterinary School there in 1906.

On March 16, 1910, as Hubrecht's successor, he was appointed professor of zoology , comparative anatomy and zoogeography at the Utrecht University, which was his task on April 18 of the same year with the introductory speech Is specialisatie in de zoölogische wetenschap heilzaam of gevaarlijk? (German: Is specialization in zoological science beneficial or dangerous? ) began. Among other things, he worked as an editor of the twelve-volume reference work Oosthoek's geïllustreerde encyclopaedie , together with his former assistant Johan Egbert Willem Ihle (born August 7, 1879 in Amsterdam; † September 21, 1956 in Rotterdam) he edited the Dutch textbook on general zoology and in 1928 wrote zoological treatises in various scientific journals and journals of his time.

Here especially stood solenogastres , chitons, nematodes and molluscs in the focus of his research. In the academy year 1924/25 he was elected rector of the Utrecht Alma Mater , for which he gave the rector's speech Celleer en evolutie (German: cell biology and evolution ) on the 289th anniversary of the university on March 26, 1925 . In 1930 he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and on June 5, 1936 he was made Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . Nierstrasz, who had gone to Switzerland for a cure because of his rheumatism, died unexpectedly there. His body was transferred to the Netherlands and buried in Amsterdam.
