List of rectors at Utrecht University

Signet of the University of Utrecht

This is a list of the rectors of the University of Utrecht . It is a cultural-historical compilation of the international history of higher education and the history of different historical epochs of higher education in the Netherlands. After the departure of the founding rector, the rectorate was changed annually, as at other European universities. This change seems to have persisted into the 1970s, although a longer term of office was carried out here during the Second World War.

As at other European universities, the university's rector was elected. He had to take an oath according to the university statutes and then carried the title of rector magnificence . The rector's duties always related to the maintenance measures of the university. Thus, he always worked on the organizational decision-making processes of the same. In addition, the election of a rector of the university was always recognition of his work in the relevant faculties and in the public reflection of the university.
