Johannes Theodorus Rossijn (born December 18, 1744 in Noordzijpe , province of North Holland , † December 27, 1817 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch philosopher and mathematician .

Life

The son of the pastor Laurentius Heinrich Rossijn enjoyed his first training in Weesp , where he learned Latin and mathematics. In 1761 he enrolled at the University of Franeker , where he completed studies with Antonius Brugmans . On December 10, 1762 he acquired the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy with the work De tonitru et fulmine ex nova electricitatis theoria deducendis ("About thunder and lightning according to the new theory of electricity"). On September 15, 1763 he enrolled at the University of Leiden , where he also gave lectures and completed his habilitation.

On January 12, 1765 he became professor of philosophy, mathematics and astronomy at the University of Harderwijk , which office he took with the speech De philosophia ad humanitaten pertante . Here he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1767/68, which he resigned from with the speech De mathematicis Belgarum ingeniis . On July 31, 1775, the curators of the University of Utrecht appointed him professor of speculative philosophy and metaphysics at their university. He entered this office on September 25, 1775 with the treatise De scientiis philosophicis ex veritate aestimandis . In Utrecht he was also rector of the alma mater in 1778/79, 1796/97 and 1807/08 . In 1777 he was the initiator and co-founder of the Natuurkundig Gezelschap te Utrecht (freely translated into German: Naturkundigen Gesellschaft in Utrecht ). On October 16, 1815, Rossijn, who also appeared as a poet of Latin verses, retired and died from the rapid decline in strength, deeply mourned by his friends and admirers.
