history

Explanation of the name: The name Sijpe means something like : watercourse ( Dutch : doorsijpelen , as much as percolate).

In the early Middle Ages there was land here that was then inundated by storm surges. The result was a lake that threatened to flood again with every storm. Among other things, the painter Jan van Scorel , who came from the area, advocated the drainage of the Zijpe Sea.

The municipality of Zijpe was created in 1597 through poldering and grew to the size of the end of 2012 after the incorporation of the previously independent municipalities of Petten (1929) and Callantsoog, Abbestede and Groote Keeten (all incorporated in 1989).

economy

Not only tourism is important for the economy, but also research ( EURATOM test reactor in Petten ) and the cultivation of flower bulbs.

The next train station is in Schagen.
