Schagen ( listen ? / I ) ( West Frisian Skagen ) is a Dutch town and municipality in the province of North Holland . Audio file / audio sample

Location and economy

Schagen is about halfway between Alkmaar and Den Helder . The distance to both cities is about 20 km. The Alkmaar - Den Helder trains stop here every half hour. There are no motorways in the municipality.

It is the supply center for the surrounding villages, with a lot of trade and small businesses. The livestock market, which was important until 2001, no longer exists in connection with the foot and mouth disease . Agriculture and tourism, however, are important economic factors.

history

Castle tower

Schagen was first mentioned in 989 as Scagha in a document from Egmond Abbey . There was on some "terpene" ( mounds ), according to the 1248 part of the so-called "Frisian perimeter dike" (West Friese Omringdijk) accounted for. In the 15th century, the heyday came: in 1415 the town was granted the town charter , shortly after the Schager Castle commissioned Herzog Albrecht I of Bavaria built and his illegitimate son William of Bavaria Schagen, 1460, the (now defunct) Santa Christophoruskirche , and market rights had existed since 1463. During the Eighty Years' War , the predominantly Catholic population took the side of the Spaniards. The Geusenführer Sonoy conquered the area in 1573 and acted with great cruelty against the Catholics until William of Orange put a stop to him . After that Schagen remained a quiet provincial town and was mainly of importance as a market center for cattle; since 1603 there has been an annual horse market. Historical events only occurred in 1799, when English and Russian troops trying to conquer Holland, which was occupied by Napoléon Bonaparte , took the Schager Castle and partially destroyed it.

In 2013 Schagen was merged with the municipalities of Zijpe and Harenkarspel to form a new municipality of Schagen.
