List of cities in the Netherlands
This is a list of the places in the Netherlands that have ever been granted city rights. It is not known for all cities when they received their town charter.
Since the constitution was changed in 1848, the “town charter” of a locality (plaats) no longer has any constitutional or administrative significance; instead, there is only the municipality (gemeente) . Some cities had remained small towns in their development and were partially merged with other, larger towns in the area to form new municipalities, which were then occasionally given a completely new name, such as Bernisse , to which Geervliet belongs today. Staverden , one of the smallest ("former") towns in the Netherlands, is now part of the municipality of Ermelo, a "village". Schellinkhout first came to Venhuizen and then to Drechterland, at Winkel it was first Niedorp , today it's Hollands Kroon. The “towns” of Genemuiden and Hasselt (Overijssel) now belong to the municipality of Zwartewaterland .
