history

As early as the 10th century, at the end of a watercourse that cut through the moor, there was a village that was later drowned by floods. Monnickendam probably originated before the 13th century by the damming of a small lake. The place , which was elevated to a town in 1355, is named after the Frisian monks who settled here. The city quickly developed into a central fishing port for the Zuiderzee fisheries . Despite its walls, the city was besieged and captured several times. In the early 15th century, a siege is said to have been accompanied by a bloodbath, so that today there is still a street name Kermersgracht ("Wimmerergraben"). In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Baltic Sea trade was also important. The dike in the Zuiderzee meant the end of fishing there.

The name of a body of water northwest of downtown Monnickendam shows that there were already environmental problems in the 17th and 18th centuries : Stinke Vuil ("stink dirt"). In Graft-De Rijp at that time many residents were employed in whaling . The Tran was after the return of the whaling ships worked in Holland, a craft that originated in the bad smells. Smelly waste products were dumped onto certain fields or even into the water. The canal section between De Rijp and the Zuiderzee near Monnickendam was given this name. Nowadays there is no trace of this water pollution.

The oldest playable carillon in the world is in Monnickendam .
