Sea dike with foreland (left) in Wesselburenerkoog , Dithmarschen district

Dike describes a process of land reclamation . For this purpose, dikes are built in front of the mainland and the surface water flowing off the diked area is channeled through ditches and sluices into the sea. The diked land is called Koog in Schleswig-Holstein , Groden in Lower Saxony and Polder in the Netherlands and on the Ems . A pasture will now be formed from the previous salt marsh in a few years .
