places

Cities and villages

The “capital” of the municipality, where the town hall is also located, is Steenwijk , where around 17,100 people live. Steenwijkerland also includes the towns of Blokzijl (1,400 inhabitants) and Vollenhove (in the local dialect: Veno ) (4,100 inhabitants), the villages of Kuinre , Giethoorn (2,600 inhabitants), Eesveen, Oldemarkt (2,600 inhabitants), Ossenzijl, St. Jansklooster (2,400 inh.), Steenwijkerwold (1,900 in.), Tuk en Zuidveen (actually suburbs of Steenwijk), and Wanneperveen, each with over 500 inhabitants, and several smaller towns with fewer than 500 inhabitants.

hamlet

Among these hamlets there are some with regionally influenced names:

  • Nederland, whose place name tags are often stolen by young people, the name also means: Netherlands or: lowlands ;
  • Muggenbeet, the name of which does not mean mosquito bite , but comes from an old Saxon word for: small stream ;
  • Witte Paarden, named after an inn The White Horses ;
  • Doosje (origin of the name Döschen unknown);
  • Blauwe Hand (named after a hostel);
  • Paasloo, with a mill in the shape of a vat ;
  • Jonen, with a ferry for cyclists and pedestrians;
  • Onna, already known in the 14th century, and others.

Location and economy

The municipality covers the entire north-western tip of the province and borders on Fryslân (Friesland), Flevoland and Drenthe . The capital Steenwijk is located on the car and railway lines Leeuwarden - Meppel - Zwolle - Amersfoort - Utrecht / Amsterdam .

Steenwijk, the supply and administrative center of the region, has many smaller commercial and industrial companies. In Vollenhove there is a shipyard that specializes in the construction of very exclusive yachts . In the whole community, which is partly below sea level and has fairly swampy soil, livestock farming is important, but so is tourism. The wetlands, small lakes and canals, as well as some picturesque places, attract especially nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts.

history

The city Steenwijk received the 1327 city law . In the Eighty Years War , Steenwijk was besieged by the Spaniards unsuccessfully from 1580. The defense of the city was then headed by Johannes Corputius . In 1581 the Spanish troops abandoned the siege and withdrew. In the following year, Corputius was no longer commander in Steenwijk, but the city was again besieged and finally taken. In 1592 it could be recaptured by the Dutch.

Blokzijl originated in the 16th century. During the siege of Steenwijk from 1580–1581, a reinforced “sluice” (sluice) was built there. The place received city rights in 1672.

Vollenhove was first mentioned in a document in 944: King Otto the Great owned a forest there and granted the Utrecht bishop the right to hunt . The city emerged in the Middle Ages around Toutenburg Castle, which was devastated several times. Sturgeon fishing flourished there in the 15th century . Like Blokzijl, Vollenhove flourished modestly in the 17th century as a result of shipping peat from Drenthe across the Zuiderzee to rich Holland and the presence of some wealthy noble families.

Sint Jansklooster is named after a monastery that stood there from 1399 until it was destroyed in 1581.

Giethoorn was founded around 1200 as one of the first peatland colonies in Dutch history. Oldemarkt had a tradition that went back to 1437, that an important fair is held on St. Lambertustag . Until about 1900 butter and cattle markets, which were the most important in the region, took place here regularly.

Kuinre used to be on the Zuiderzee . It had a harbor and, in the Middle Ages, a castle, where the lords of Kuinre ruled, they were notorious pirates . In the 17th century the port was a redoubt mounted.

On January 1, 2003, the municipality of Steenwijk was renamed Steenwijkerland .

Attractions

In the city of Steenwijk is the Art Nouveau house Ramswoerthe (1899), with an adjoining park. The city still has two remarkable churches (15th and 17th centuries) and a city scales (built in 1684).

Blokzijl has a marina, around which picturesque houses from the 17th century are grouped. It also has a church built in the 17th century.

Vollenhove has two remarkable old churches (15th and 17th centuries), the Toutenburg castle ruins with park, the Old Ruitenborgh manor house (18th century; since January 1, 2006 a party center with restaurant and modest hotel) and several old houses, including the former Latin school (17th century).

Giethoorn and Dwarsgracht, between Blokzijl and Steenwijk, are picturesque villages whose inhabitants transport themselves and their cattle in "punters" (small boats) due to the lack of country roads. Many of the farmhouses have now been converted into second homes or holiday homes. The filmmaker Bert Haanstra made a film in Giethoorn in the 1950s about village life, which has greatly stimulated water sports tourism. In summer the houses are illuminated a few times in the evening, which makes a romantic tour possible.

Between Kuinre and Steenwijk there is the “Weerribben” nature park, a very valuable “wetland” area that can be visited with a guide. In the south of the municipality is the nature park “De Wieden” with a few lakes (Wieden or wijden: large expanses of water, partly created by the dredging of peat) and a moorland similar to “Weerribben”. There is a lot of sailing on the lakes. A visitor center is located in the village of Sint-Jansklooster, near Vollenhove.

In the area of the Oostertor in Steenwijk there is a monument to Johannes Corputius designed by Hans Kuyper in 2003 . In 1581, he successfully defended the city against the troops of Georg von Lalaing .

Every year on the third Friday of August, in Sint Jansklooster a flower parade instead. The floats, which are up to 10 meters high and depict scenes from plays, are decorated with hundreds of thousands of dahlias .
