Location and economy

The municipality is located in the northeast of the province, on the Vechte , and borders, among other things, on the municipalities of Twenterand and Ommen and on the county of Bentheim on German territory. The local railway Zwolle - Emmen stops in Hardenberg, Gramsbergen and Mariënberg ; here you can change to another local train and travel via Vriezenveen to Almelo . The canals Kanaal Almelo-De Haandrik and Coevorden-Vechtkanaal make the Hardenberg municipality accessible for inland navigation. There are many agricultural and small industrial companies spread across the municipality (the latter especially in the town of Hardenberg, which has a small inland port). Tourism is also important. The Veldzicht correctional facility for mentally ill offenders is located in Balkbrug.

Hardenberg itself has a small car-free pedestrian passage with shops. The indoor and outdoor pools are located across from the market square. You can also swim in the adjacent river Vechte .

Hardenberg has even smaller suburbs, the largest of which is “Baalder” with its own shops.

history

The town of Hardenberg emerged as Nienstede around a chapel built after the year 754 and a Hardenberg castle built in 1089 on a small hill along the Vechte .

In 1227 an important battle took place near the hamlet of Ane between troops of the bishop of Utrecht and rebels, mostly simple peasants, under the leadership of Rudolf, the Count of Coevorden , from Drenthe . The troops of the bishop, who himself died on the battlefield, suffered a severe defeat. A memorial still reminds of this war event.

Hardenberg was walled in 1230 by Wilbrand von Oldenburg and received full town charter from the Utrecht bishop Johann IV von Arkel in 1362 . Remnants of the wall are still preserved in the city center. Among other things, the Hardenbergers were allowed to hold four annual markets each year . The city was a transshipment point, with a port on the Vechte, for agricultural products, and a stop on the Zwolle - Bremen route . On May 8, 1708, Hardenberg was almost completely destroyed by fire; In the city, therefore, hardly any historical buildings have been preserved.

Also Gramsbergen is officially a small town; the place that had connections to the Hanseatic League was granted city rights in 1442 .

The area flourished modestly through the extraction of peat . A local gentleman financially interested in peat mining, Baron van Dedem, had the Dedemsvaart canal dug in 1809. Under his leadership, workers and smallholders began to build the fen colonies Dedemsvaart and Balkbrug in the 19th century . The canal was completed in 1853, but was largely filled in after the Second World War to make way for a road.

The current community of Hardenberg was re-formed on May 1, 1941 through the merger of the previous communities of Ambt Hardenberg and Stad Hardenberg .

Attractions

Southwest of the city between Hardenberg and Ommen is a forest area with sand dunes ( Beerzer bulten , Holocene ), which is partly designed as an amusement park “De Oldemeyer” with a swimming lake and an adjacent campsite. The Vechttal is criss-crossed by bike paths and a popular destination for bike enthusiasts and hikers, as the Pieterpad long-distance hiking trail crosses Hardenberg. There are a few small country estates in the community where you can go hiking in their parks.

In Dedemsvaart you will find the "Tuinen Mien Ruys ", model gardens by the well-known Dutch garden architect Mien Ruys (under monument protection since 2004) that are accessible to the public. In Slagharen there is the large amusement park "Slagharen" , which is particularly attractive for families with children (6-14 years). Gramsbergen has a picturesque town center with old houses and farms around the church.

Hardenberg's village of Gramsbergen is in partnership with the Dahlenburg municipality in Lower Saxony .

The former municipality of Avereest (see above) also has a partnership with a German municipality, Bad Rothenfelde .
