geography

The landscape is mostly flat, only between Buurse and the border is it slightly wavy (up to 42 meters above sea level). Most of the land is used for agriculture, partly as meadows (cows, horses, sheep), partly as fields (especially corn). The brook 'Buurserbeek' flows from east to west, called 'Schipbeek' from the water mill. About a fifth of the area is a nature reserve. South of Haaksbergen you will find 'Het Lankheet', a deciduous and coniferous forest. The 'Buurserzand' heathland and the 'Haaksbergerveen' moorland lie between Haaksbergen and Buurse. To the east of Buurse, on the German border, lies the 'Witte Veen', a moor and forest area. All natural areas are freely accessible and have good hiking and cycling trails.

Culture and sights

There are not many, but there are some interesting sights:

  • The Sint Pancratiuskerk (Sankt-Pankratiuskirche) stands on the market in Haaksbergen. The first wooden church was built here around 900. Around the year 1000 it was replaced by a stone church in Romanesque style (now the rear part of the central nave). Around 1300 it was extended to the choir. In 1398 Ludolph, the Lord of Ahaus , founded a vicarie in honor of St. George. A new chapel was built for this to the right of the front part of the main nave. In 1520 the church was added to the right of the rear part of the nave, so that a two-nave church was created. The tower was built in 1565 by order of Philip II , the Spanish king, as a lookout and defense point for the onset of the Eighty Years War. After the Reformation, the church fell into the hands of the Dutch Reformed Congregation in 1646. In 1810, Ludwig Napoleon, Napoleon's brother, ordered the church to be returned to the Catholics. In 1888 the church was rebuilt again: it got a new sacristy, the choir was enlarged and the nave was raised. In addition, a third nave with a chapel was built to the left of the main nave, creating a three-nave hall church.
  • Behind the Pankratiuskirche you will find the Nederlands Hervormde Kerk (Dutch Reformed Church). The first church was built around 1810 because the parish could no longer use Pancratius Church. On August 16, 1851, the church burned down in a major fire in the village. After a large collection campaign, a new church was built, which was used for the first time at Christmas 1854. In 2009 the interior was redesigned.
  • The Richtershuis is located next to the church. It was built in 1720 by Judge Joan Jansen van der Sluys. The coat of arms of his family can be seen over the entrance. Law was administered here until his death in 1738, after which it came into the possession of the Reformed Church.
  • To the left behind the Pankratius Church is the synagogue from 1828. It is said that it is the smallest in the Netherlands.
  • On the Spoorstraat is the 'Villa Jordaan', built at the end of the 19th century for the Jordaan textile manufacturer. Until the 1970s, his textile factory stood on the left behind the villa (now library and school).
  • The Buurtspoorweg Museum operates steam trains between Haaksbergen and Boekelo (Enschede district) in the summer months.
  • South of Haaksbergen you will find the 'Oostendorper Watermolen', a double water mill from the 16th century.
  • In the countryside there are various old Saxon style farms, the history of which often goes back to the Middle Ages.

The hub of cultural life is' Kulturhus' t Iemenschoer '. Under his roof are u. a. a theater, a music school, a course institute and an art exhibition hall. All kinds of performances take place in the 'De Kappen' theater, from farmer's revues and cabaret to classical music. In the 'Kunstzaal Achterom' works by Haaksberger and other artists are exhibited. There are also various cultural associations, e.g. For example the Haaksberg revue 'Allo Jannao', the folkloric dance group 'De Hakkelklumpkes', the art association 'Kunstkring Haaksbergen' and the history association 'Historische Kring'. A museum about the natural and cultural history of Twente can be found in Enschede, the 'Twentse Welle'.

Sports

Haaksbergen is also a sports city. There are many sports clubs such as shooting, tennis, fishing and football clubs. In the sports park 'Scholtenhagen' you will find tennis and soccer fields, an athletics track, an indoor swimming pool and an open-air ice rink, which is used as a skate rink in summer. There is also a BMX cross track and a motocross track. Every year the international 'IBIS-toernooi' is organized, a chess competition for the blind.

economy

The textile industry, which dominated from 1862 to 1970, no longer exists, industry only exists in small businesses in various branches. Many commuters live in Haaksbergen who work in Hengelo and Enschede.

In 2004 Uzin Utz took over the Unipro company in Haaksbergen.

Events

In May there is the annual fair and the famous May market, which runs through the whole city.

In 1996 Haaksbergen hosted the 11th  European Shooting Festival , an event organized by the European Association of Historical Shooting .

In an accident at the AutoMotorSportief event in Stationsstraat on September 28, 2014, three people died in an out of control 1500 HP monster truck .
