biography

Steffan Winkelhorst started skiing at the age of three. At the age of nine he joined a ski association and made the decision to pursue a skiing career. After some junior successes at national level, he was accepted into the Dutch national team in 2007. As the reigning Dutch slalom champion , he made his European Cup debut in the giant slalom in Zell am See in January 2012 . In March of the same year he took part in the Junior World Championship in Roccaraso and recorded four starts, but was only able to classify himself as 44th in the giant slalom. In his second JWM participation at Mont Sainte-Anne , he was eliminated in both giant slalom and slalom.

Without any World Cup experience, he started his first World Cup in February 2013 in Schladming . In the Super-G he reached rank 59, in the technical disciplines he did not finish again. At the end of the season he celebrated his first international victory in an FIS slalom in Courchevel . After successful summer training in Argentina , he tore a cruciate ligament at the end of the year . Due to restructuring in the Dutch federation, he had to train with the German national team for a while on his comeback. At the end of 2014 he won the national indoor championship for the first time , but found no motivation to continue during the season and temporarily ended his career.

After skipping the entire 2015/16 season and concentrating on his studies, he celebrated a comeback in the indoor ski area and again won the national indoor championship. On December 22nd, 2016, he made his World Cup debut in the Madonna di Campiglio slalom and has since started sporadically in this discipline. He still mainly competes in the European Cup, in which he has been among the top 20 six times so far. In February 2017 he contested his second world championship in St. Moritz and finished 41st and 42nd in giant slalom and slalom. The following summer he took part in all of the technical races of the Australian New Zealand Cup and finished second once. At the end of February 2018 he was crowned two-time Dutch champion in giant slalom and slalom in St. Johann im Pongau .

Winkelhorst lives in Haaksbergen .
