Madonna di Campiglio (German outdated Sankt Maria im Pein ) is an Italian town in Trentino , around 30 kilometers northwest of Trento and 60 km north of Lake Garda (as the crow flies). In a valley between the Brenta Group and the glaciated Adamello-Presanella Group, protected from north winds , it is located at 1,550 meters above sea level. It belongs to the municipalities of Pinzolo and Tre Ville .

There are numerous hotels and pensions and very large apartment complexes.

The basis of tourism is a hospice founded in 1188, which was in operation for many centuries. After publications by the Englishman John Ball, who had crossed the Bocca di Trenta in 1864, the first tourists came to the place. The nearby Campo Carlo Magno Pass (1662 m) is said to have been crossed by Charlemagne and his army in 787 during the fight against the Lombards, according to legend.

The approximately 750 inhabitants live mostly from tourism, which gained in importance in the second half of the 19th century due to the Austrian and Central European aristocratic and rich middle class. Local Habsburg worship (Piazza Sissi, La Stube di Franz Joseph etc.) and the annual celebration of the "Habsburg Carnival" in mid-February also go back to this tradition when members of the Habsburg family - especially Empress Sissi and Emperor Franz Joseph I . dismounted and important representative of the entire European aristocracy in Madonna di Campiglio -. The place has an extensive ski area up to about 2600  m , which is connected to the ski areas of Folgarida and Marilleva in the north via the lifts .

Madonna di Campiglio has recently gained particular fame through competitions in the Alpine Ski World Cup ( 3-Tre race ) on the Canalone Miramonti slope.

Furthermore, Madonna di Campiglio was always the venue for the Ferrari Ski Days in January from 1990 to 2013.

In the center of the village there is the church of Santa Maria Antica with a Gothic triptych from the 15th century or the connected church from 1972 (architect Marcello Armani from Trento) and a museum about the mountain guides and outstanding personalities from Madonna di Campiglio.
