The 42nd Alpine World Ski Championships took place in Schladming from February 4th to 17th, 2013 .

The venue was chosen on May 29, 2008 in Cape Town ( South Africa ) by the 46th FIS Congress. Schladming clearly prevailed in the first ballot (with 10 out of 16 votes) in the vote against the applications from Cortina d'Ampezzo (Italy), St. Moritz (Switzerland) and Vail / Beaver Creek (USA).

Schladming, together with Haus im Ennstal, already organized the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1982 and applied unsuccessfully to host the 2009 and 2011 World Championships. After the 2013 World Championships were awarded by the FIS, the International Council for Ski Mountaineering Competitions (ISMC) also selected Schladming as the venue for the 2011 World Ski Mountaineering Championships .

Slopes

Finish arena of the Planai Stadium in Schladming

In contrast to the 1982 World Cup, where downhill , slalom and women's combined events were held in the neighboring house in the Ennstal , in 2013 all the medal decisions took place on Schladming's local mountain, the Planai , on the “ Planai ” ski slopes (men's races, women's Giant slalom , team competition) and " Streicher " (all other women's races). Both routes end in the same stadium in the immediate vicinity of the city center.

Because of the numerous entries in the men's giant slalom and men's slalom, qualification races were held on the nearby Reiteralm , which are also rated as FIS races.

Attendees

At the beginning of the world championship, 609 athletes from 70 countries were registered, the number of which increased to 612 athletes from 72 countries by February 15, 2013 due to 3 late registrations from 3 countries. They fought for a total of 33 medals .

Team competition

Date: Tuesday, February 12, 2013, 5:00 p.m.
Route: Planai

The team competition was held in the form of a parallel giant slalom. In each round, two women and two men from one team competed against each other in four runs, the winning team received one point per run; if the runtime was the same, both teams got one point. With a final score of 2: 2, the sum of the running times of the fastest woman and the fastest man per team decided.

The best 16 teams in the current Nations Cup ranking of the 2012/13 season qualified for the race . The Spaniards, who are in 15th place, did not start, so only 15 teams take part. This was the highest number of participants in an alpine team competition so far. In 2011 eleven nations competed. It was Norway's first participation in a World Cup team competition, and Liechtenstein was taking part in such a competition for the first time.

By waiving Spain, the top seeded Austrians received a bye in the round of 16.
