Christof Innerhofer (born December 17, 1984 in Bruneck ) is an Italian ski racer . The South Tyrolean mainly competes in the Downhill and Super-G disciplines . The greatest success of his career so far is the 2011 Super G world title .

biography

Innerhofer learned to ski at the age of three in Gais . After finishing school at his birthplace, he attended the sports high school in Mals as a teenager . He then joined the police sports group. In November 1999 he competed in the first FIS races , appearances in the European Cup followed four years later. In 2006 he moved from the police to the Guardia di Finanza sports group .

Due to good performances in the European Cup during the 2005/06 season (including two victories), Innerhofer took part in World Cup races from November 2006 . He won World Cup points for the first time on December 10th of the same year as 24th in the super combination on the Reiteralm . At the 2007 World Cup in Åre he was 38th in the downhill and eighth in the team competition . On December 29, 2007, he finished ninth in the downhill in Bormio, first placing in the top ten.

On December 28, 2008, Innerhofer won his first World Cup race, the downhill run on the Pista Stelvio in Bormio . Previously, fourth place was his best result, which he had achieved a little more than three weeks earlier in the Super-G at Beaver Creek . In February and March 2009 he achieved two third places in the Super Combined in Sestriere and in the Super G in Åre and finished his most successful season to date, 2008/09, finishing fifth in the Super G World Cup, tenth in the Downhill classification and eleventh in the overall World Cup . At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , finishing fourth in the Super-G, he missed the medal ranks by just five hundredths of a second. He was also tenth in the downhill and 15th in the combination.

In November 2009 Innerhofer won the silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Amnéville, which was held for the first time by the European Ski Association . He achieved two top 10 results at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver with sixth place in the super-G and eighth in the super combined. In the World Cup, on the other hand, he was barely able to match the previous year's results in 2009/10 and was only twice in the top ten.

The 2010/11 season brought a significant increase in this regard, so he was third in the downhill from Bormio . At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he won the gold medal in the Super-G with a large time margin, followed by the silver medal in the super combined and the bronze medal in the downhill.

At the beginning of November 2011 Innerhofer fell badly while training in the Stubai Valley and suffered a concussion and a slight knee injury. As a result, he initially struggled to achieve the level of performance of the pre-winter. In mid-January 2012 he came third on the Lauberhorn run in Wengen . He succeeded in confirming the world championship title in Schladming in mid-March when he won a World Cup Super-G for the first time.

In the 2012/13 season , Innerhofer scored three World Cup victories in the downhill runs from Beaver Creek, Wengen and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, more than any other driver of the season. In the downhill classification he took 4th place. In the 2013/14 World Cup season , Innerhofer was among the top ten five times, but did not manage to place on the podium. At the 2014 Winter Olympics , he won the silver medal in the downhill and the bronze medal in the super combined. In the winter of 2014/15 he made it into the top 10 three times, after the World Cup he broke off the season due to various health problems.

The 2016/17 World Cup season was not free of injuries for him either. After a serious fall in the Super-G of Santa Caterina, which is part of the Super Combined, just before the finish (December 20), he felt a pain behind the knee at the level of the fibular head and had to pause for a long time. Surprisingly, he made a successful comeback with a second place in the Super-G in Kitzbühel on January 20, but further investigations revealed such damage, which led to the World Cup speed races taking place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen a week later ( 27/28 January) and had to announce his absence from the 2017 World Cup in St. Moritz on February 5 . In the end he was also missing in the other races.
