The Pista Stelvio is a ski race track in Bormio . It was the venue for the Alpine World Ski Championships in 1985 and 2005 . The by 2013 annual World Cup - Downhill is one of the most difficult and dangerous descents in the world and is run generally only in the men's World Cup. The Pista Stelvio is particularly steep, fast and winding.

Stelvio is the Italian name for the municipality of Stilfs . The Pista Stelvio is located in the Stilfserjoch National Park .

history

At the 1985 World Championships , all men's competitions were held on the Pista Stelvio. The most successful athlete was Pirmin Zurbriggen with gold medals in downhill and combined . The team competition, which was newly included in the World Cup program, was held for the first time at the 2005 World Championships. Here, Switzerland won ahead of Austria and France on the Pista Selvio. As in the 1985 World Cup, all men's competitions at the 2005 World Cup took place on the Pista Stelvio. The most successful athlete was Benjamin Raich (gold in slalom and alpine combination, silver in giant slalom and team competition, bronze in super-G).

The World Cup has been in Bormio since the 1993/94 season . Usually a men's downhill run is run on the Stelvio shortly before the turn of the year. In some years there are also two races, and the Stelvio was the scene of the World Cup finals in 1995 , 2000 and 2008 , where in addition to the downhill, which had to be canceled in 2008, a Super-G , giant slalom and slalom were also held were.

Routing

The descent begins with the steepest part of the entire route. The starting gun has an incline of 63% - this is the steepest start of all World Cup descents. A right and a left curve follow at short intervals. The latter flows smoothly into the Rocca jump . Another right-hand bend leads into the 300-meter-long high-speed passage Canalino Sertorelli . After a long left bend into the short flat section of Fontana Lunga , the most demanding and winding parts of the descent follow, the so-called Hermelin bends and the Carcentina traverse . The short Ciuk section continues to the San Pietro jump with widths of around 40 meters. The subsequent San Pietro shot is the fastest passage on the route, where speeds of up to 140 km / h can be reached. The last sections of the Pista Stelvio, Bosco Alto and Feleit , also predominantly consist of fast corners. The finish is made with the target jump and the target shot.

Winner lists men

The following tables show the top three of all World Cup races that have so far been held on the Pista Stelvio . In 1995, 1997, 2001 and 2006 there were two downhill runs each, in 2000 two giant slaloms.
