Peter Fill (born November 12, 1982 in Brixen ) is a former Italian ski racer . The South Tyrolean was particularly successful in the fast downhill and Super-G disciplines as well as in the combination . In 2009 he was runner-up in the Super-G world championship. In the 2015/16 season he won the Downhill World Cup. He was able to repeat this success in the 2016/17 season . He is the first Italian to ever win the Downhill World Cup.

Career

In February 1999, Fill won gold in all four disciplines at the national junior championships. He celebrated his first international success at the 2001 World Junior Championships in Verbier , Switzerland , when he came third in the giant slalom . The following year he won the gold medal in Super-G at the 2002 Junior World Championships in Tarvisio . Thanks to this title, he was allowed to make his debut in the World Cup on March 7, 2002 and went straight to twelfth place.

In December 2002, Fill achieved his first World Cup placement among the top ten in sixth place in the giant slalom in Val-d'Isère . In December 2003 came fourth place in the Super-G of Beaver Creek . At the super combination of Wengen in January 2006 he finished third for the first time on the podium and by the end of the 2005/06 season he made it onto the podium twice more. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , his best result was ninth in the combination.

In the 2006/07 season , Fill was among the top three in four races and, after Alberto Tomba, he was the first "Azzurro" to temporarily wear the red jersey of the overall World Cup leader; in the final ranking he was the best Italian in sixth place. In 2007/08 he was six times in the top ten in the World Cup, but remained without a podium and thus fell short of his expectations.

In the summer, Fill changed the ski brand and on November 29, 2008 he achieved the first World Cup victory of his career on the first season descent in Lake Louise ( Canada ). He could in the super combined in Wengen he ran a superb slalom performance at No. 2. With a total of eight top-10 finishes in the 2008-09 season for the second time in 2006/07 in both the overall World Cup and in combination, Downhill and Super-G World Cups among the top ten.

Fill has taken part in the World Ski Championships five times so far. In 2003 in St. Moritz he was 13th in the Super-G, 20th in the downhill and 11th in the combination. In 2005 in Bormio he was 14th in the Super-G and 24th in the downhill. In the team competition, he finished eighth with the Italian team. In 2007 , eleventh downhill rank in Åre was his best result. He finished the super combination in 13th and the super G in 14th place. At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère on the steep and icy slope La face de Bellevarde , Fill won the silver medal in the Super-G, placing behind the Swiss Didier Cuche and ahead of the three-time world champion Aksel Lund Svindal . This medal was the only men's medal that Italy could win at this World Cup. In the super combined he achieved fifth place. In the end he won the team competition, which is only part of the Nations Cup, in the "Team Italy" season finale in Åre on March 15, 2009.

On August 23, 2009, Fill suffered tendon tears in the groin and abdominal muscles during giant slalom training in Argentina. Eleven days later, he had an operation in Finland. After several months of injury, he made his comeback in the World Cup on January 16, 2010 on the Lauberhorn run in Wengen. With eighth place he qualified for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , where he was 15th in the downhill, but retired in the super combined and super G after a serious fall shortly before the finish. Due to severe bruises and back pain, he stopped racing this winter.

At the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Fill won the bronze medal in the super combined, the best result in the 2010/11 season was fifth place. In the following two years he was only able to finish in the top ten in isolated cases. On January 26, 2013, Fill fell spectacularly on the Hahnenkamm run in Kitzbühel : He raced against the boards at high speed on the steep slope and rolled backwards, but only suffered bruises.

The season 2015/16 was for him the best for a long time. Except for one retirement in Santa Caterina, he made it into the top 10 in all downhill races. After finishing second in Lake Louis (3rd place in the Super G) and fourth place in the Val Gardena classic, he surprisingly won the Hahnenkamm downhill on January 23, 2016 in Kitzbühel. The race, overshadowed by several serious falls, was canceled after starting number 30, but still counted. At the end of the season, Fill became the first Italian to win the Downhill World Cup.

In the following World Cup season, Fill was able to build on the results of the previous season and celebrated his first World Cup victory in this discipline on February 26, 2017 at the Super-G in Kvitfjell . In the downhill he could not win, but reached the podium five times and overtook the Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud in this classification with a second place at the World Cup final in Aspen , whereby he won the Downhill World Cup for the second time in a row. In the 2017/18 season he secured victory in the combined ranking with ranks two and three. At the Winter Olympics in 2018 he went on the descent to sixth place, but had then the season because of a thigh muscle injury prematurely. The injury severely hindered him in summer training and he had to end the season again at the beginning of January 2019.

As a result, Fill lost touch with the world's best. In the winter of 2019/20 he only finished two points in ten World Cup races. On January 25, 2020, he retired from the Kitzbühel downhill run on the Streif and announced a few hours later that he would end his career. He contested his last World Cup race on February 1st in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , where he waved to his coaches and supervisors while driving and thus finished 52nd and last. At the finish he was celebrated by his teammates and his family, as well as the many fans.

Private life

Peter Fill is the son of Luzia and Alois Fill and has two sisters, Bettina and Sara (she was also a ski racer, but had to quit because of back problems). After compulsory school he began as an apprentice in a body shop and attended vocational school. But when the obligations of skiing became more and more intense, he gave up the job as a body plow. Fill is the cousin of the former ski racer Denise Karbon and the nephew of Norbert Rier , the singer of the Kastelruther Spatzen , who dedicated a song to him after his success at the World Championships in Val-d'Isère in 2009 , “Again a great time”. He speaks German, Italian and English and belongs to the Carabinieri sports group . His hobbies include soccer, golf, motorcycling and mountain biking. Fill is often a guest of honor in the stadium of his favorite club Juventus Turin .
