Lake Louise is a settlement in the Canadian province of Alberta with 1041 inhabitants (2001), which is primarily known as a vacation spot. It is the starting point for ski tours in winter as well as wildlife watching and mountain hikes in summer, which is why there are several hotels, some of which are luxurious.

Lake Louise is not a separate community. As a settlement it has the status of Hamlet ( hamlet ). The settlement is administered by the Improvement District 09 (Banff) .

geography

Lake Louise is located in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies between the Bow River and the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) over the Kicking Horse Pass and Alberta Highway 1 , which is part of the Trans-Canada Highway . Banff is located around 55 kilometers southeast .

Lake Louise is divided into three districts. The main town, known as The Village of Lake Louise , is at a low altitude in the valley floor. The Lake Louise Mountain Resort ski area to the east is grouped with several gondola lifts and chairlifts mainly on Mount Richardson above the main town at an altitude of approx. 1600  m and leads to locations of approx. 2600  m . On the west side above the village there are hotel complexes on Lake Louise , below Mount Temple .

history

Settlement of the place began when the Canadian Pacific Railway ran a railway line past there and set up a station in the late 1800s. Like the nearby lake, the place was named in honor of Princess Louise Caroline Alberta of Great Britain and Ireland, Duchess of Argyll . After the hotel Château Lake Louise opened in 1913 , more and more holidaymakers and adventurers came to the town. Ski areas for the winter season and trekking routes for the summer season were opened up and further expanded.

Tourism and sport

Every year, very snow-sure Lake Louise organizes FIS World Cup ski races at the beginning of the winter season , primarily in downhill skiing and super giant slalom (see Alpine Ski World Cup in Lake Louise ). Wildlife viewing tours are organized in the summer months. The observation of grizzly bears plays a preferred role. In the surrounding area are including black bears , wolves , cougars , bobcats , bighorn sheep , mountain goats , white-tailed deer and elk before.
