team called off

The 40th Alpine World Ski Championships took place from February 2 to February 15, 2009 in Val-d'Isère .

All men's races as well as the technical women's races ( giant slalom , slalom ) took place on the spectacular La face de Bellevarde course , which was laid out for the 1992 Winter Olympics but has not been used for major international ski competitions since then. The venue for the downhill , Super-G and women's combination was the new, also very challenging Solaise Rhône-Alpes slope .

On June 30, 2007, Jean-Claude Killy resigned as President of the Organizing Committee. The three-time Olympic champion protested against the lack of political support and the slow progress in building a new media center and the slopes. Marc Bauer, the mayor of Val-d'Isère, took over the management.

Choice of venue

The winter sports resort in Savoy was awarded the contract at the 44th FIS Congress in Miami on June 3, 2004 (in the "Intercont" hotel). Thus was France after 1937 , 1962 (all in Chamonix ) and 1968 (as part of the Winter Olympics of Grenoble ) for the fourth time host of the Alpine World Ski Championships.
In the selection process, Val d'Isère prevailed in the decisive second ballot with 8 votes against Schladming (4) and Vail (3). Garmisch-Partenkirchen was eliminated in the first ballot with only 2 votes.

program

The world championship did not start on January 30th as originally planned: The schedule has been tightened, the eleven planned competitions thus extend over a period of only 13 days. In addition, the team competition should not take place on the last day, as in 2007 and 2005 , but rather before the technical competitions, but had to be removed from the program without replacement due to bad weather.

As in the 2007 World Cup, there were qualifying races for the giant slalom and men's slalom due to the very high number of participants on the previous day. In addition to the 50 seeded drivers, 25 more each could qualify.

For the first time in the technical disciplines, only the best 30 runners from the first run were allowed to start in the second run, as is done in the World Cup.

Worth mentioning

Sporty

  • After two world championships (2005, 2007) in which the Swiss women had no medals , Lara Gut was able to win two medals.
  • Lindsey Vonn won both women's speed races - became the first US runner since Andrea Mead-Lawrence (Oslo 1952) to become a double gold winner for her country. So far, only Maria Walliser had achieved gold in downhill and super-G in 1987 (and Michaela Dorfmeister at the 2006 Olympics ).
  • John Kucera , as the "surprise winner" at all, won gold for Canada's men for the first time at a major event. So far, silver from Jan Hudec and bronze from Jim Hunter and Steve Podborski (this at the same time as the Olympic bronze - and also the Olympic bronze from Ed Podivinsky in 1994) were the only men 's medals for the "maple leaves" (and here, in 2009, there were still Slalom bronze for Michael Janyk ).

Others

  • A preview indicated that television would produce 600 hours of the World Cup for 450 million viewers worldwide. 230,000 fans have reserved tickets, with most of the French choosing the men's slalom. 1,800 media representatives and 350 athletes from 60 nations were registered. Austria was represented in the athletes sector with 10 women and 15 men.

* Michael Walchhofer drove the race twice. Race director Günter Hujara had ordered a short interruption due to heavy fog in the upper part, but the start judge gave Walchhofer's start permission, whereupon he moved to twelfth place. The Austrian head coach applied for a new start, which was granted. When the conditions were optimal again, Walchhofer was the second-to-last driver on the route and improved to ninth place. After the race, however, the jury determined that the first run was valid and Walchhofer kept his twelfth place.

Defending champion Svindal finished 11th, 1.70 s behind
