Giorgio Rocca (born August 6, 1975 in Chur ) is a former Italian ski racer . He grew up in Livigno ( Province of Sondrio ) and still lives there today. His specialty was slalom .

biography

He first attracted attention at the 1999 World Ski Championships in Vail when he missed the podium in slalom by just a few hundredths of a second and finished fourth.

At the 2003 World Ski Championships in St. Moritz , he won the bronze medal in slalom behind Ivica Kostelić and Silvan Zurbriggen . At the World Ski Championships 2005 in Bormio (which is only a few kilometers away from his place of residence) there were two more bronze medals, in the combination (behind Benjamin Raich and Aksel Lund Svindal ) and in the slalom (behind Benjamin Raich and Rainer Schönfelder ).

Rocca was able to win eleven world cup races (all slalom competitions). In the 2005/06 season he won five races in a row in the slalom discipline and secured first place in the discipline classification despite a below-average second half of the season. Rocca took the Olympic oath during the opening ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . He was considered a big favorite for the slalom, but was eliminated in the first run. The years that followed were rather meager for his standards, but he was able to consistently hold his own in the first group in the slalom.

On February 17, 2007, he ended the season prematurely to have an operation on his right knee. On January 8, 2010, he retired from his career after suffering a groin injury in training in Domobianca and was unable to attend the 2010 Winter Olympics .

Rocca's mother is Swiss and comes from the Lower Engadine village of Scuol . For this reason, in addition to Italian, he also speaks Romansh and German .
