The province of Sondrio essentially comprises the Valtellina . The province of Sondrio includes the old valleys of Chiavenna ( Val San Giacomo and Valchiavenna ), Valtellina and Bormio . The area belonged to the Free State of the Three Leagues from 1512–1797 .
