geography

The municipality is located about 37 kilometers northeast of Sondrio on the Adda . Valdisotto is part of the Comunità Montana dell'Alta Valtellina , in the east of the municipality is the Stilfserjoch National Park . The neighboring municipalities are Bormio , Grosio , Sondalo , Valdidentro and Valfurva . To the south of Bormio, the Valdisotto, a narrow corridor crossed by the Adda river, connects the Bormio basin with the Valtellina, Lake Como and the Po Valley .

history

In the Middle Ages, the abbey of St. Columbanus from Bobbio had rich estates here. The municipality of Valdisotto was hardest hit by the tragic events of July 1987, the year of the Valtellina floods. In fact, the landslide that separated from Monte Zandila (Monte Coppetto) completely destroyed the town of Sant'Antonio Morignone and the territory of Morignone. More than 50 people were killed in the process. The damage amounted to about 4 trillion lire.

The highest number of deaths, however, 28, occurred in the hamlet of Aquilone, which had not been evacuated and was destroyed by the movement of air. Add to this 7 workers who a few days ago were working on restoring the road that was overloaded by a landslide. From this ruinous landslide the church of San Bartolomeo de Castelàz was saved, which, due to its slightly elevated position, was completely surrounded by the landslide itself.

traffic

Strada Statale 38 dello Stelvio from Piantedo to Bozen runs through the municipality (almost entirely as a tunnel) .

Sports

There are two ski areas in the municipality of Valdisotto: that of Oga, which connects with San Colombano and the ski slopes of Isolaccia in the municipality of Valdidentro , and that of Bormio. In fact, the slopes of the Vallecetta mountain on which the ski lifts and ski slopes are located in the municipality of Valdisotto.
