Madesimo (pronunciation: / maˈdɛzimo, maˈdezimo /, until the end of 1983 Isolato , Dialetto chiavennasco Madesan ) is an Italian commune with 533 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and a town in the Lombardy region in the province of Sondrio , at the foot of Pizzo Groppera . Madesimo is located on the Splügenpass road , near the border with the Swiss canton of Graubünden in Val San Giacomo on Lago di Montespluga and Lago di Isola .

The municipality includes the fractions of Madesimo , Isola , Montespluga and Pianazzo , where the municipal administration is located. Neighboring communities are Campodolcino , Ferrera (CH-GR), Mesocco (CH-GR), Plurs , Splügen (CH-GR) and Sufers (CH-GR).
history
On April 23, 1946, the body of Benito Mussolini was buried in Madesimo , which had previously been stolen by fascists from the cemetery in Musocco near Milan . In 1957 the body was moved to its final resting place in Predappio .
Sports
The first ski races in the Alps took place in Madesimo at the beginning of the twentieth century. Today the community has a ski area with 48 kilometers of slopes. The highest mountain station in the area is on Pizzo Groppera (2948 m above sea level). In this mountain station, Roger Schawinski set up the first Radio 24 transmission system, out of reach of the Swiss radio supervisory authorities.

economy
Madesimo had its heyday as a holiday resort in the mid-1960s, when the place was experiencing a construction boom. Townspeople, especially from Milan, bought condominiums in apartment buildings or built holiday homes here. Meanwhile, Madesimo has become quieter.

Personalities
The poets Giosuè Carducci and Giovanni Bertacchi spent many years on vacation in Madesimo.
Probably the most famous descendant of Madesimo is Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi . One of his direct ancestors moved from there to Zurich in the 16th century to study and settled there.
