He moderated television programs, was editor-in-chief of the newspaper Die Tat and publisher of the monthly magazine Bonus .

Live and act

Roger Schawinski comes from Zurich. As the child of the Jewish textile goods trader Abraham Schawinski, he grew up in Zurich-Wiedikon . After business school at the Kantonsschule Enge Schawinski acquired at the age of 21 years, the maturity on the second chance . He studied economics at the University of St. Gallen (HSG). In 1973 he was with the work of the socio-economic factors of tourism in developing countries: The case of Guatemala in the field of economics doctorate . During his studies he spent two semesters at Central Michigan University, where he earned an MBA. He also completed an internship at the Neue Presse in Zurich.

From 1972 he first worked as a journalist for Swiss television . From 1974 he founded and moderated the consumer magazine Kassensturz . From 1977 until his dismissal without notice in 1978, he worked as editor- in- chief at the Migros daily newspaper Die Tat .

In 1979 he founded the first Swiss private radio, Radio 24 , which initially broadcasted as an Italian broadcaster from Pizzo Groppera in Northern Italy with what was then the strongest VHF radio station in the world as a radio adviser to Switzerland, before it, after being supported by the youth movement at the time and a broad public, was licensed in Switzerland in 1983 alongside other private radio broadcasters. In April 1981 Schawinski received an award from the American Billboard magazine.

In the 1980s, Schawinski was managing director of the Stella Group, which owned cinemas in several Swiss cities and was active in film distribution and film production. He founded the Zurich city magazine Bonus , which appeared until 1996. In 1991 he founded the classic radio station Opus Radio , which in 1992 had to cease operations again due to a lack of definitive approval for FM broadcasting.

Schawinski founded TeleZüri, the first private local television broadcaster in Switzerland, which went on air in 1994. There he moderated, among other things, the talk show “TalkToday”, in which he talked to guests. In 1995 Schawinski was awarded the Tele Prize and in 1996 the Zurich Radio and Television Prize. In 1998 he founded Tele24, the first nationwide private television broadcaster in Switzerland, for which he was awarded the Gottlieb Duttweiler Prize in the same year . In 1999, the major Swiss bank Credit Suisse took over 40 percent of the shares in Schawinski's Belcom Holding AG , which the various companies owned. The Swiss media company Tamedia AG took over Radio 24 and TeleZüri in August 2001 for 80 million Swiss francs. Tele24 was then discontinued.

On December 4, 2003, Schawinski was appointed managing director of the private television broadcaster Sat.1 by the new owner, Haim Saban . With a few announcements, including the show Anke Late Night , he came under criticism at the beginning. In June 2005, his contract was extended by two years. The attempt to revive the program Talk in the tower called Talk of the Week , which he initiated , ran only from August 7th to October 9th, 2005 and was canceled after ten episodes due to the low ratings . The market share of Sat.1 under Schawinski initially rose from 10.2 percent (2003) to 10.9 percent (2005) and fell in 2006 - the year of the soccer World Cup in Germany - to 9.8 percent. When Schawinski took over the station, it made no profit, in 2006 he achieved a record profit of more than 200 million euros. At the end of November 2006, Schawinski announced that he would leave Sat.1 early at the end of 2006 on his own initiative.

At the beginning of October 2007, Schawinski bought the Zurich Radio Tropic from Frédéric Dru in order to start a new radio station. The new station, called Radio 1 , went on air for the first time on March 17, 2008. From 2010 to 2015 he discussed current issues with Roger Köppel on Mondays in the format Roger versus Roger . In 2016 the show was continued with Markus Somm , the then publisher and editor-in-chief of the Basler Zeitung .

Schawinski wrote a weekly column in the SonntagsZeitung from 2009 to 2013 . He was on the newspaper's columnist team in 1987 when the newspaper was launched.

After 34 years, Schawinski, who had " advanced to become one of the sharpest critics of the SRG ", returned to Swiss television, where he began his journalistic career. From August 22, 2011 to March 23, 2020, he hosted the talk show named after him «Schawinski» every Monday on SRF 1 . There he used to discuss with exponents from politics and business.

In January 2014, Schawinski took over the Radio 105 station with the aim of integrating it into Radio 1. The station had previously had to file for bankruptcy.

2016 awarded him the University of Freiburg the honorary doctorate . This recognized his commitment to media freedom and diversity.

In 2018 Schawinski published a pamphlet against the No-Billag initiative , which he declared to be one of the most important disputes, which caused a sensation because he had fought vehemently against the SRG monopoly for many years.

Also in 2018, Schawinski published a book on conspiracy theories in which he criticized current representatives of this way of thinking such as Alex Jones , Ken Jebsen or Daniele Ganser . The Neue Zürcher Zeitung described it as pleasantly written, but complained about the somewhat alarmist tone. The Basler Zeitung praised the book as a “clever, informative, even brilliant book”, while Schawinski's research on Daniele Ganser “belongs to the best in the book”. At most, it was criticized that Schawinski did not address conspiracy theories from the left enough. The Journal21 came to the conclusion that the reader of the «factual book [s] about the obscure cosmos of conspiracy theories, their cynical producers and their naive or bitter supporters [...] could gain some enlightenment insights on this highly topical subject area» .

Private

Schawinski has been married for the third time since 1996 and lives in Zurich. He has a daughter together with his current wife Gabriella Sontheim. The first marriage in 1970 remained childless. From the second marriage in 1981 come a son (* 1981) and a daughter (* 1983). His son Kevin Schawinski was Professor of Astrophysics at ETH Zurich until 2018 .

In March 2014 his autobiography Who Am I? In 2018 he was a member of the Pro-Committee for the private “Ensemble” project by HRS and Credit Suisse (a new football stadium with two high-rise buildings) in Zurich. The project was accepted.

Adoption of texts from Wikipedia and other sources

In 2016 Schawinski published the book I am the very greatest. Why Narcissists Fail at No & But Publishing . According to the Tages-Anzeiger , both texts from Wikipedia and newspaper articles - such as Der Spiegel - were taken over without being identified as sources in the book. There are also many formulations that can be found on other websites on the Internet, for example in articles from Die Zeit and the NZZ . The non-fiction editor Ulrich Nolte from the CH Beck publishing house criticized this in an interview as “fraud against the reader”.
