Kevin Schawinski (born April 28, 1981 in Zurich ) is a Swiss astrophysicist . Until 2018 he was Professor of Astronomy at ETH Zurich .

Kevin Schawinski grew up in Switzerland and Germany. His father is the Swiss media entrepreneur Roger Schawinski . Kevin Schawinski studied physics and mathematics at Cornell University in the USA and graduated in 2004. From 2007 to 2008 he was a Henry Skynner Junior Research Fellow at Balliol College , University of Oxford. He received his PhD in astrophysics from Christ Church, University of Oxford in 2008 .

From 2008 to 2009 he was a “Postdoctoral Associate” and from 2009 to 2012 an “Einstein Fellow” at Yale University in America . There he explored galaxies . Schawinski is co-founder of the volunteer projects Planet Hunters (search for new celestial bodies) and Galaxy Zoo (classification of galaxies). In 2012 he received a professorship from the Swiss National Science Foundation at ETH Zurich. In 2017 he was awarded the MERAC Award of the European Astronomical Society .

Since September 2018 he has been working for his ETH spin-off "MODULOS" in Technopark Zurich.
