Robin GM Nisbet

Robin GM Nisbet FBA (full name Robin George Murdoch Nisbet , born May 21, 1925 in Glasgow , † May 14, 2013 in Oxford ) was a British classical philologist .

life and work

Robin GM Nisbet, the son of the classical philologist Robert George Nisbet, attended the Glasgow Academy from 1933 to 1942 and then studied classical philology at the University of Glasgow . In 1943 he interrupted his studies for his service in World War II (until 1945). In 1947 he joined the master's program at the Balliol College of Oxford University . After completing his master's degree (1951), he worked as a research fellow at Corpus Christi College (Oxford) , where he was made a fellow and tutor in 1952. In 1970 Nisbet was appointed to the Latin chair at Corpus Christi College, which he represented until his retirement (1992). In this position he supervised numerous doctoral theses in the 1970s and 1980s. He was an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College (from 1989) and Corpus Christi College (from 1992). 1997 awarded him the British Academy , the Kenyon Medal .

Nisbet dealt with numerous aspects of Latin literature, particularly with rhetorical and poetic texts. His main works are commentaries on the Odes of Horace , the first two volumes of which he wrote together with his long-time colleague Margaret Hubbard ; a volume for the third book of the Odes appeared more than a quarter of a century later in collaboration with Niall Rudd .
