Butterfly Boucher (pronounced 'bau-sher') (born June 2, 1979 ) is an Australian singer and songwriter.

biography

Butterfly Giselle Grace Boucher was born on June 2, 1979 in Adelaide, the fourth of a total of seven sisters. The name "Butterfly" (German: Butterfly ) was the suggestion of a family friend. Her parents are the ballet dancer Vivienne "Vivi" and the singer Rodney Malcolm Michael "Rod" Boucher.

She gained her first experience as a musician at the age of 15 in the band "Eat the Menu" (later renamed "The Mercy Bells"). Her sister Becca sang and Butterfly played bass in the band founded in 1992 .

In June 1996 "Eat the Menu" released the album "Whoosh" ; the album was re-released a year later under the new band name "The Mercy Bells". In 1998 "The Mercy Bells" moved to Nashville and Los Angeles for six months and then operated in the United Kingdom . The band signed a record deal with Polydor , but Boucher was dissatisfied with the collaboration: “I don't think they did any promotion for that first record. There weren't even posters. It was like suddenly we were signed, but it didn't change anything. "

Plans for a second album were shelved after disagreements with the record company. While the project "The Mercy Bells" was paused, she first worked as a solo artist in Stockton . She returned to Nashville in 2000.

In October 2003 she released her first solo album Flutterby on Universal and A&M Records . The album reached the Top 40 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers charts. I Can't Make Me and Another White Dash were released as singles . In 2004 Boucher toured the United States and Europe as the opening act for Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan . In the same year the song Changes appeared as a new recording in a duet with the original artist David Bowie on the soundtrack for Shrek 2 - The daring hero returns .

In 2005 she started working on her second album Scary Fragile , which was handed over to A&M in 2006 . In February 2007, the song "A Bitter Song" from the album was used in the episode "Disappeared" of the Grey's Anatomy series. After various delays due to differences with the producer, the record company and legal issues, the album was finally released independently in June 2009. Boucher describes her problem with the record company as follows: “[t] hat's what was so frustrating. I had been there before and I managed to do it again ... I wasted those three years and lost my love of music in the process, trying to figure out what other people wanted. "

Boucher is part of the musician collective " Ten Out of Tenn ", which was founded in 2005 in Nashville.

In 2008, several members of the Boucher family were involved in the film The Burial . Butterfly and sister Becca wrote two songs, her father Rod played a priest, her sister Danielle was a co-director, her mother Vivi was responsible for the catering and the other sisters played smaller roles and supported the production.

When she accompanied Sarah McLachlan on her Lilith Fair tour in 2010 , she met the Australian songwriter Missy Higgins . In 2011 Boucher co-produced Higgins 'album The Ol' Razzle Dazzle . Boucher and Higgins each recorded their own version of the song "Unashamed Desire" and released it on their respective albums.

In 2011 Boucher toured again with McLachlan. In 2012 she was a band member on Missy Higgins 'Australian tour and acted alongside Katie Herzig (also a member of the "Ten Out of Tenn") on Higgins' US tour as an opening act. Also in 2012 she released the album Butterfly Boucher .
