Andrew Breitbart (born February 1, 1969 in Westwood , Los Angeles , California , † March 1, 2012 ) was an American conservative editor , blogger and activist .

Life

Breitbart grew up as the adopted son of Gerald and Arlene Breitbart in a Jewish family. He graduated from Tulane University with a bachelor's degree in American Studies in 1991.

He was previously a contributor to the Drudge Report website and in 2005 co-founded the (then mostly conservative) online newspaper The Huffington Post .

With his own websites (including biggovernment.com, bigpeace.com, bigjournalism.com, Breitbart.tv) Breitbart became known as a fighter against the American "liberals" and left . This included his involvement in various scandals, such as the one around Congressman Anthony Weiner (Democrat), who eventually led to his resignation, and the dismissal of the Afro-American employee at the Department of Agriculture Shirley Sherrod , with whom he was in a legal dispute until his death , and the ACORN aid organization , which eventually led to its decline. In all cases, Breitbart had brought media material to the public, but in the ACORN case, according to a report by the California attorney general, it had been severely and meaningfully edited. The New York Times withdrew its reports based on the material. Breitbart also appeared frequently as a commentator on the Fox News Channel .

Breitbart died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 2012 at the age of 43 . He was buried in the Hillside Memorial Park Jewish Cemetery in Culver City .

Republican presidential candidates Rick Santorum , Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich praised Breitbart. Santorum called Breitbart's death a great loss. Romney called him a fearless conservative.

A cinematic documentary about him entitled Hating Breitbart was released on October 19, 2012.

His Breitbart News Network was taken over by Stephen Bannon after his death and developed into the most important publication medium of the far-right alt-right .
