Missy Higgins (born August 19, 1983 in Melbourne ; real name Melissa Morrison Higgins ) is an Australian singer-songwriter.

biography

Beginnings

Melissa Higgins sang occasionally in her brother's band when she was a teenager and while at school she took part in the Kool Skools program, a Southeast Australian project that gives students the opportunity to make professional music recordings and perform. In 2001 she had her first major success when she won the Unearthed talent competition on the radio station Triple J in the metropolis of Melbourne.

Then John Watson signed her to his independent record label Eleven and in November 2003 the The Missy Higgins EP was released with the Unearthed winner All for Believing and three other songs. However, the record received little attention.

breakthrough

This changed suddenly in 2004 with the second publication. The Scar EP debuted at number 1 on the Australian charts and went platinum (70,000 copies sold). It was one of the biggest hits of the year and was named best pop single at the ARIA Music Awards 2004, the music award of the Australian record industry. In addition, Better Than Ezra's Missy Higgins and Kevin Griffin won two main prizes at the APRA song writing awards for writing the theme song Scar .

The subsequent debut album The Sound of White , which was produced in the USA, did the same as the Scar EP and conquered number 1 on the album charts. The album held the top position for seven weeks and stayed in the charts for over a year. It was the best-selling album of the year in Australia and has now reached nine times platinum (560,000 copies sold).

Accordingly, Missy Higgins was now one of the stars of the Australian music scene. She started her own tour. She was one of the headliners at the national benefit concert for the tsunami victims in 2004. And at the 2005 ARIA Music Awards , she won five awards out of seven nominations, including Artist and Newcomer of the Year and Album of the Year. She was also named Best Newcomer at the MTV Australia Video Music Awards .

National and international

In 2005 she expanded her career to the English-speaking world and released her next single Ten Days in the US and UK and toured these countries in 2006.

In the USA she then produced her second album On a Clear Night , with which she was able to seamlessly build on the success of her debut in her home country. The pre-released EP Steer rose to number 1 on the Australian charts at the end of April 2007, as did the album two weeks later.

In July 2007 she performed at Live Earth's Australian concert .

In 2009 she was able to celebrate her first success in the USA. The album On a Clear Night made it to the Billboard 200 and the single Where I Stood made it into the top 10 of the adult contemporary charts. In the same year, the musical film Bran Nue Dae , in which Missy Higgins had taken on an acting role, also appeared in Australia .

The singer produced her third album in Nashville . It was three years before The Ol 'Razzle Dazzle was released . In her home country she reached number 1 again and in the USA she made it into the top 100 of the album charts.

music

Their music is classified in the alternative pop-rock category. While the piano accompaniment dominated on her first album The Sound of White and the hit Scar , Missy Higgins switched more to the guitar on her second album On a Clear Night . One of her special features is that she preferably publishes her singles in EP format, i.e. with four different titles on one maxi CD. She also sings her songs with a strong Australian accent.
