Australian music charts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Australian music charts are determined on behalf of the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). Create charts for songs, albums and music DVDs. In addition to the country's official single and album charts, there are numerous other evaluations, for example on different styles or club and compilation charts.

history

The forerunners of the ARIA charts were the go-set charts of the music magazine of the same name, which existed from 1966 to 1974 and which were determined on the basis of radio broadcasts and shop sales. David Kent then began on his own initiative in July 1974 with the preparation of the Kent Music Report . Originally, they were purely an evaluation of radio broadcasts that were sold to interested parties by subscription. With increasing popularity, the opportunities to include sales figures also grew, which in turn increased its importance and with it its recognition as national charts for retailers, the music industry and radio stations. From 1976, data from the record stores were included, from 1982 the Kent evaluations were predominantly sales charts.

When the most important music labels in Australia merged to form the Australian Recording Industry Association in the early 1980s , they wanted to have an official market research tool, as in other countries. Since the Kent Music Report met their requirements, they licensed the charts under their name and contributed financially to the chart investigation. The first edition of the ARIA charts appeared on July 10, 1983.

The collaboration with David Kent continued until 1988, when ARIA took over the charter position on its own. Under the name Australian Music Report , the Kent Report continued to exist as a competing product until the end of the 1990s, before it was discontinued as a result of the technical development of data acquisition.

In February 1997 the calculation methods of the ARIA charts were changed and the sales figures were determined directly by barcode scans at the points of sale . From October 8, 2006, sales as downloads were added to the CDs ; from November 2007, download-only publications were also permitted. At the time, the database included 1,100 CD stores and 13 digital providers in Australia. With the issue of November 24, 2014, data from music streaming providers were also included in the single charts . 175 streaming views counted as much as a single sale. From May 5, 2017, the streaming data of entire albums were also recorded and included in the album charts starting with the May 15 issue.

Since January 2006, the data collection period has been from Saturday to the following Friday. The charts are then published and are dated the following Monday. Previously, the evaluation was carried out from Sunday up to and including Saturday.
