Prata Camportaccio (German medieval: Überport ) is an Italian commune in the Lombardy region in the province of Sondrio .

geography

The community has 2957 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) on an area of ​​27 km². It is located at the confluence of the Liro in the Mera . The neighboring communities are Chiavenna , Gordona (Lombardy) , Mese , Novate Mezzola , Piuro and Samolaco .

history

The name Prata appears in documents from AD 973. However, the municipality was not autonomized from Chiavenna until the 13th century , including the localities of Uschione and Campedello, which belonged to the municipality of Chiavenna in 1872 and in the second half of the 16th century. The name Camportaccio was added to Prata in 1863 to avoid situations of homonymy.

The traces of San Cassiano go back to the year 1108, when the village was named "San Cassiano di Arona" in a document. Later, in the seventeenth century, the name changed to San Cassiano in the woods to become San Cassiano Valchiavenna more recently.
