Simone Gatto

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simone (Simon) Gatto (* around 1545 in Venice , † 1595 in Graz ) was an Italian conductor and composer.

He was trained in Venice and worked as a trombonist at the court in Munich from 1568 , before continuing his professional career in Graz from 1572. In the local court orchestra he started out as a wind player and in 1581 was promoted to court conductor. Many Italian musicians, especially wind players, moved to the north at this time and Gatto made several trips to his homeland to recruit instrumentalists.

He only created sacred works. A number of masses and motets have been preserved, some in print and some handwritten. In terms of composition, he followed the style of his hometown.
