The Mera (in Switzerland also in the dialect of the Bergell , the "Bregagliott", called Maira ) is a 50 kilometer long river in Switzerland and Italy . It flows through the Bergell valley.

The Maira formed from several mountain streams, which in side valleys of the Val Maroz (Val da Cam near Piz Duan , in Mungiroi the Piz Mungiroi and Piz Piot , in Val Lunga Piz Piot Piz Turba and Piz Mäder ) in the canton of Grisons spring . The Aua da Sett flows from the Pass da Sett (de: Septimerpass) in the Val Maroz into the Maira, which is still flowing to the east. At Casaccia the river turns south. Coming from the Malojapass , the Orlegna joins the Maira from the left. The first village on the stream that is now flowing west is Vicosoprano , where the Albigna, which flows off the Albigna reservoir, flows into it. Then the Maira flows through Stampa . The Bondasca flows into the next village of Bondo .

After the river crossed the border into Italy at Castasegna , it bears the Italian name Mera . The Acquafraggia , which has an imposing waterfall, flows out at Piuro .

In Chiavenna the Mera now turns south again. Below Chiavenna, the largest town on the river, the Liro flows from the right, coming from the north of the Splügen Pass , and shortly afterwards the Crezza and the Boggia . The Mera flows through the Lago di Mezzola and flows into Lake Como at Gera Lario .
