Casaccia is a village in Bergell in Graubünden .
geography
The street village Casaccia is the uppermost village in Bergell. It is 1458 m above sea level. M. on a small plain at the foot of the Malojapass on the Orlegna and near its confluence with the Maïra . The panoramic high path to Soglio begins in Casaccia .
history
Casaccia was first mentioned in 1160 as a cassache . Due to its location at the junction of the Maloja and Septimer passes , Casaccia was an important transit station until the 19th century. The ruins of the medieval Turraccia tower above the village are a reminder of this function .
The former hospice stood near the ruins of the former pilgrimage church of San Gaudenzio above the village on the pass road. It is mentioned in a document in 1336, but is likely to be much older. It was moved to the Cunvent village after 1520 and served as an inn for the Maloja and Septimer passes.
The village was devastated several times by the Orlegna flowing down from the Malojapass.
Casaccia had its own municipality until 1971, after which it was a fraction of the Vicosoprano municipality . Since the beginning of 2010 Casaccia has been part of the municipality of Bregaglia, which includes all the villages in the valley .
