Bregaglia ( Romansh ) is a municipality in the Maloja region of the Swiss canton of Graubünden .
coat of arms
The municipality has adopted the coat of arms of the Bergell district , of which it was the only municipality.
Blazon : In silver on a black shield base in pewter cut a black ibex walking upright to the right, red armored.
Community merger
It was created on January 1, 2010 and includes the previously independent municipalities of Bondo , Castasegna , Soglio , Stampa and Vicosoprano . The municipality of Bregaglia and the former Bergell district thus cover the same area.
geography
The majority of the community is located in the Bergell, which gives it its name . The municipality also includes the village of Maloja on the pass of the same name , which is the only part of the municipality in the Upper Engadin .
A severe landslide occurred in the Bondo area at the end of August 2017 .

languages
While Maloja is bilingual, German and Italian, the other places have Italian-speaking majorities, with German-speaking minorities of ten to 20 percent. A Lombard dialect is spoken in Bergell , and there has been a growing German-speaking minority for decades. Originally, Romansh was also spoken, but this language has been almost completely displaced. Bargaiot is increasingly spoken; This Bergell dialect combines (based on the Lombard dialect) Italian and Rhaeto-Romanic elements with German words.
