Euagrios of Antioch
Euagrios (Evagrius) of Antiocheia († 392/93) was bishop of his native city Antioch on the Orontes from 388 , where he also died. He was known to Emperor Valentinian I , Pope Damasus I and Hieronymus . He was one of the few Greek church writers who also mastered the Latin language.
Around the year 373, Euagrios translated the Vita Antonii of the Alexandrian bishop Athanasius (around 300–373), the biography of Saint Anthony (251? –356) from around 360 , into Latin. With his translation, he contributed significantly to the spread of the Vita Antonii and thus also to the spread of Christian monasticism in the west of the Roman Empire.
