S-chanf ( [ʃtɕaɱf] ? / I , German and until 1943 officially Scanfs ) is a municipality in the Maloja region of the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland . The community is located at an altitude of around 1660 meters on the upper reaches of the Inn in the Upper Engadin in the La Plaiv landscape . languages

The inhabitants mainly speak Puter (an idiom of Rhaeto-Romanic) and German ( Bündner dialect ). In addition, there are Italian and Portuguese , languages ​​in S-chanf of resident immigrants.

Until the middle of the 19th century, all residents spoke Romansh. With the advent of tourism, a minority switched to German. However, the language relations between 1880 and 1941 remained fairly stable. In 1880 86% and in 1900 82% stated Romansh as their mother tongue, in 1941 it was 81%. This value then fell to 65% by 1970, rose sharply again in the following decade - and has been falling ever since. After all, 68% of the population were still able to communicate in Romansh, which is still the only official language.

The Engadin line Pontresina-Scuol of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) runs via S-chanf . A bus line operated by the EngadinBus bus company in St. Moritz serves as a fine distributor.

The goal of the Engadin Ski Marathon is at S-chanf (in the military area northeast of the village) .
