The Engadin Skimarathon is by far the largest cross-country skiing event in Switzerland and a run in the Worldloppet series. It has been held in the Upper Engadin every year on the second Sunday of March since 1969. In 1991 the event was canceled at short notice due to a drop in heat and the consequent lack of snow. The length of the race, which is held in free style , is 42 kilometers. 11,000 to 13,000 runners take part. 13,331 participants registered for the 47th Engadin Skimarathon on March 8, 2015. That was the third best entry result in the history of the marathon. The 50th anniversary of the Engadin Skimarathon took place on March 11, 2018.

Cross-country skiers on the frozen lake in the Upper Engadin

The course record is 1 hour 16 minutes and 10 seconds and was realized in 1994 by Hervé Balland . In the same year, Silvia Honegger ran the women's course record of 1:22:08. By moving the finish from Zuoz to S-chanf in 1998 and a new route in the Stazerwald in 2004, the topography of the marathon changed, which led to longer racing times.

The start takes place at Maloja at an altitude of 1820  m above sea level. M. The route starts via Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana (both lakes are this time of year still frozen). After St. Moritz there is a short ascent through the Stazerwald and then the descent via Pontresina to the Samedan airport . On the right side of the valley, the route continues via La Punt-Chamues-ch and Zuoz to S-chanf . There the target is located in a military area in the «Vuorcha» area at an altitude of 1670  m . In 1998, the RhB's “S-chanf Marathon” stop was built not far from the finish area .
