Fabio Santus (born May 26, 1976 in Clusone ) is an Italian cross-country skier .

Career

Santus, who starts for the CS Carabinieri, first appeared in March 1995 at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Gällivare . There he won silver in the 30 km freestyle and gold with the Italian relay. At the following Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1996 in Asiago , he conversely won the gold medal over 30 km freestyle and silver with the relay. He ran his first World Cup race in December 1996 in Brusson , which he finished in 48th place over 15 km freestyle. In December 1999 he got his first World Cup points in Sappada with the 26th place over 15 km freestyle. In his first Olympic participation in Salt Lake City in 2002 , he finished 26th over 50 km classic. In the following year he came in the Nordic World Ski Championships 2003 in Val di Fiemme on the 19th place over 50 km freestyle. His best season in the World Cup was in 2003/04 . At the beginning of the season he achieved his first top ten placement in the World Cup with sixth place over 15 km freestyle in Beitostølen . In the further course of the season he came in three more individual races in the top ten. He achieved his best individual placement in the World Cup in January 2004 in Falun with fifth place in the 30 km pursuit race. He finished the season in 28th place in the overall World Cup and 19th in the Distance World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf in 2005 , he achieved 35th place in the 50 km mass start race. In the following year he finished 33rd in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin over 15 km classic, 19th place in the 50 km mass start race and 16th place in the 30 km pursuit race. In February 2007 in Davos he achieved second place with the relay, his first and only podium finish in the World Cup. In the same month he won the 30th place over 15 km freestyle at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo . He finished the 2007/08 Tour de Ski in 23rd place.

Since the 2008/2009 season, Santus has mainly participated in the cross-country skiing marathon cup , in which he took first place in the 2009/10 season and second place in the overall standings in 2010/11 . He won the Engadin Skimarathon (2009), the Dolomitenlauf (2010, 2011, 2012), the American Birkebeiner (2010) and the La Sgambeda (2010). In 2009 he also won the Dobbiaco-Cortina classic over 40 km.
