etymology
The first Swedish mention of the place in the form of Gillewara is given as 1673. The name is the Swedish form of the Lulesami Jiellevárre , which in turn means an ore mountain . Jielle stands for gap or space and indicates an elongated valley in the ore- rich mountain or fjäll (várre) .
history
The neighboring town of Malmberget, located three kilometers north and on a southern hillside, was originally the main town of the settlement. Because of the massive iron ore mining, parts of the village had to be relocated and the newly created settlement forms what is now the larger Gällivare.
Together with the neighboring towns of Malmberget and Koskullskulle , there are numerous pits and processing plants for iron ore here .
From June 2nd to July 12th, the midnight sun can be seen from Mount Dundret (823 m).
Gällivare has a campsite.
Transport and transport links
Gällivare is important as a traffic junction of the ore railway Luleå –Gällivare– Kiruna - Narvik and the inland railway that ends here . The station, built in the log cabin style, once received an award for the most beautiful Swedish station.
The European route 45 ( Inlandsvägen ) and the European route 10 also run through the city with corresponding bus routes.
Gällivare has a transport connection from the air with Gällivare Airport .
This makes the place the starting point for visits to the Swedish national parks Muddus , Sarek , Padjelanta and Stora Sjöfallet .
economy
The German Solarworld AG owns the subsidiary Gällivare Photovoltaic here , which was partially sold to the Swedish investment company Borevind AB in 2007 . The Hanover-based sales company alfasolar owns the subsidiary ArcticSolar here . Solar modules are manufactured by ArcticSolar and GPV .
