The Gällivare Airport ( IATA code GEV , ICAO code ESNG ) is a Swedish regional airport . It is located in the province of Norrbotten County, about 8 kilometers east of Gällivare in the municipality of the same name .

The airport is mainly used for regional passenger, mail, cargo, helicopter and private flights. The Estonian airline Nordica operates regular flights to or from Gällivare. The airline Nextjet , which had also regularly offered flights, ceased operations on May 16, 2018 due to the company's insolvency.

History and present

Kavaheden Airport was originally built as a military airfield during World War II . It had 3 runways, each with a length of 800 meters, which were arranged in a classic triangle.

Before civil aviation was started in 1971, one of the 3 runways was extended to 1,350 meters. In the mid-1980s, the track was extended a second time. After that, the track was 1714 meters long. At the end of the 1980s, the runway was expanded again, this time to its current width of 45 meters. At the same time, the construction of a new terminal began. This was completed in 1994.

The municipality of Gällivare began to expand the airport in 2009, in particular the construction of a new hangar and the expansion of the parking spaces for aircraft. The project is financed by the municipality of Gällivare and the European Union Regional Development Fund.
