The Pajala Airport ( IATA : PJA, ICAO : SEDP) is an airport near Pajala , a place ( tätort ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County , near the Finnish border. The official name of the airport is Pajala Airport , formerly Pajala-Ylläs Airport , even earlier Pajala flygplats . The Ylläs in the name refers to a Finnish ski resort in nearby Yllästunturi .

history

In October 1984 the municipality of Pajala set up a commission to plan an airport in the region after three companies from the electronics and computer industries had settled in Pajala. However, construction of the airport did not begin until 15 years later, at the beginning of 1999. On September 15, 1999, the airport was opened by King Carl Gustaf . When the airport opened, there was a runway of 1420 × 30 meters. This was extended to 2302 × 45 meters in 2007.

Flight connections

There are regular flight connections to Luleå Airport, approximately 240 kilometers away . The flight time is 35 to 40 minutes. Twice a day were flown with nine-seat Beechcraft King Air 200 aircraft until 2011 (from the Swedish airline barents AirLink), since then by charter companies ( e.g. Avies ) in scheduled operation with 19-seat British Aerospace Jetstream 31.
