Coordinates: 67 ° 13 ′ N , 23 ° 22 ′ O Pajala is a municipality ( Swedish commun ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Norrbotten .
The main town of the municipality is Pajala . Other notable towns are Junosuando , Kangos , Korpilombolo , Muonionalusta , Tärendö .
geography
The municipality of Pajala extends from north to south about 150 kilometers along the west side of the rivers Muonio älv and Torne älv , which form the border with Finland. The Kalixälven , which is connected to the Torne älv by the Tärendöälven , a bifurcation , flows through the municipality . The municipality, which is located in the Skanden foreland , is largely covered by coniferous forest and criss-crossed by large wetlands.
economy
The traditional economic sectors of agriculture and forestry are still of some importance today. The secondary sector is dominated by small businesses. The municipality itself is the largest employer.
Attractions
Five kilometers east of the town of Pajala is Kengis, where blacksmiths used iron and copper from the 17th to 19th centuries . Copper coins were minted there between 1674 and 1715. Today the northernmost manor in Sweden can be visited, as well as the church and the church village. In Tärendö, about 40 kilometers west of Pajala, there is an open-air museum with about 20 different buildings. The world's largest sundial is located in Pajala itself.
In the vicinity of Pajala is the Jupukka mast , one of the four tallest structures in Sweden.
