Piteå is a municipality ( Swedish kommun ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Norrbotten .

The main town of the municipality is the city of Piteå . Other notable towns are Bergsviken , Blåsmark , Böle , Hemmingsmark , Hortlax , Jävre , Lillpite , Norrfjärden , Roknäs , Rosvik , Sikfors , Sjulsmark , Svensbyn and Öjebyn . The European road E4 runs through the municipality .

Piteå is a coastal municipality on the Gulf of Bothnia . The municipal area rises from the coastal plain to a wooded hill country.

economy

In addition to larger industrial companies such as Smurfit-Kappa and SCA (manufacture of Kraftliner = paper for cardboard manufacture) with two factories, there are also some medium-sized companies. The service sector and tourism are also important industries.

Currently (June 2018), the Markbygden wind farm, Europe's largest wind farm, is being installed near the town of Piteå . With around 1100 individual wind turbines , it should have an output of around 4000 megawatts after completion .

Attractions

Öjebyn 1897

Apart from the town of Piteå, Öjebyn, 5 kilometers north-west of Piteå, deserves a special mention. Öjebyn was actually the old Piteå before the city was moved to its current location due to the Scandinavian uplift . After that, Öjebyn became a church village with around 175 church huts. The church dates from the 14th century.

There is a well-known bathing beach 6 kilometers southeast of Piteå.
