Piteå [ ̌piːtəoː ] is a town in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Norrbotten .
The city at the mouth of the Piteälven river in the Gulf of Bothnia is the capital of the municipality of the same name .
Piteå is a well-known holiday destination in Norway and Sweden and is the destination of around half of the holidaymakers in Norrbotten. Most of the foreign guests come from northern Norway.
history
When Piteå was granted city rights in 1621, the city was a little further northwest on the site of today's Öjebyn . After the devastating city fire of 1666, the location was moved to the east, as there were no longer any suitable ports at the old location due to the uplifting of the land .
After a boom as a trading and port city, further economic development was interrupted in the Northern Wars at the beginning of the 18th century when Piteå was attacked by Russian troops in 1716 and 1721. But the city recovered quickly and around 1800 Piteå was one of the most important cities in Norrland with 900 inhabitants . Between 1810 and 1856, Piteå was the seat of the newly formed Norrbotten Province.
By the beginning of the 20th century the number of inhabitants rose to around 2500. With the construction of the railway line in 1911, there was a strong development spurt. Today the industrial companies located here are primarily responsible for the further development of the city, as a large part of the railway connections have been closed.
economy
Piteå is mainly characterized by the wood processing industry. Two of Europe's largest paper mills and important sawmills are located in the city. In recent times, more and more Internet companies are establishing themselves.
In the vicinity of the city, one of the largest wind farms in the world is currently being built (as of 2018) with the Markbygden wind farm . In total, when fully commissioned, the wind farm will have around 1100 wind turbines with a total output of more than 4 GW.
