Career

The 1.88 m tall defender initially played for his hometown club Piteå HC and in the summer of 1994 switched to Luleå HF in the Elitserien , the highest professional league in Swedish ice hockey. In the 1994 NHL Entry Draft , Öhlund was selected as 13th in the first round by the Canucks, but since he could not agree on a contract with General Manager Pat Quinn , the left-shooter initially stayed in his home country. There Öhlund quickly became a regular player, celebrated winning the Swedish championship title with Luleå at the end of the 1995/96 season and was named Young Player of the Year . In the following season Öhlund was runner-up with the Luleå HF.

For the 1997/98 season , the defender finally had an offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs from the NHL, but this time Quinn was able to outbid this according to Öhlund's ideas, so that the Swede had his first games for the NHL opener in Japan against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim Canucks graduate. After the season he was elected the second best rookie in the league behind Sergei Samsonow by the Boston Bruins . In a preparation game for the 1999/00 season , Öhlund was seriously injured when the puck hit him in the right eye. After two eye operations, the defender was able to return to the Canucks squad in the same season despite permanent visual damage.

During the lockout in the 2004/05 season , Mattias Öhlund returned to Sweden for two games at his ex-club Luleå HF. Koivu was then sidelined for 24 games due to injury. Upon his return, Öhlund became the most dangerous defender in the Canucks franchise history with a goal against the Edmonton Oilers on December 15 with 84 career goals .

Before the start of the 2008/09 season , the Swede was appointed assistant captain behind goalkeeper Roberto Luongo along with Ryan Kesler and Willie Mitchell . On July 1, 2009, he signed a $ 25.25 million seven-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning as a free agent . There he established himself directly in the NHL squad and completed almost 140 games for the Bolts in the two following seasons. As a result, the Swede underwent operations on both knees in October 2011 and February 2012. Until his contract expired at the end of the 2015/16 season , Öhlund did not play any further games for Tampa due to persistent knee problems and therefore remained on the Injured Reserve List .
