Mode and participants
Compared to Turin 2006 , the 2010 Winter Olympics were held for the first time in three groups for men and - as before - in two groups of four teams each for women. The qualification for the Olympic tournament was based on the IIHF world rankings . For men, the first nine ranks ( Canada , Russia , Sweden , Finland , Czech Republic , USA , Switzerland , Slovakia and Belarus ) were automatically qualified. The next ranked teams played three qualifying tournaments in which Germany , Latvia and Norway qualified. For the women, the teams from the USA , Canada , Finland , Russia , Switzerland and Sweden were directly qualified. There were also Slovakia and the People's Republic of China , who qualified through the qualifying tournaments.
Changes
The 2010 Winter Olympics marked the first time the Games were played in a city that housed a National Hockey League franchise and allowed NHL players to compete. This was the first time that the competitions were held on the narrower North American ice surface (61 m × 26 m) instead of the standard European one (61 m × 30 m). This included savings of approximately $ 10 million Canadian dollars and the ability to increase the number of viewers attending the tournament games.
