The women's ice hockey tournament at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano took place from February 8th to 17th with six national teams as the first ever women's ice hockey tournament in Olympic history. The games were played in two ice rinks in Nagano, which were newly built for the games. These were the ice hockey arena A ( Japanese. ア イ ス ホ ッ ケ ー A 会場 ) in the district of Wakasato, with a capacity of 10,104 seats, which was called Big Hat (Japanese. ッ グ ハ ッ ト ) due to its shape , and the ice hockey arena B (Japanese . ア イ ス ホ ッ ケ ー B 会場 ). The arena, which could hold 6,078 spectators, was nicknamed Aqua Wing (Japanese ア ク ア ウ ィ . ). While the 15 preliminary round games were all played in the smaller Aqua Wing , the two finals took place in Big Hat .

The gold medal went to the USA , who defeated four-time world champions Canada 3-1 in the final. It was the United States' first victory in a major tournament over Canada. Third place and thus the bronze medal went to Finland .
